Toots and The Maytals
50th Anniversary Tour
Ipswich Regent Saturday 17th September 2011 When Toots and his band came on to the stage the audience were on their feet and rushing for the front even before they had launched into their first song, the classic Pressure Drop. Wearing white jeans, a white waist coat, black bandana and shades, Toots commanded the stage, urging the band on, keeping the crowd dancing. Through Reggae Got Soul and the cover Louie Louie, the pace was relentless and the beat infectious, you couldn’t keep still. With no break between songs the crowd were not allowed to cool down and were kept interested with the infusion of different styles into reggae, a little calypso, a little funk, and even a little country. The last track before the encore was Monkey Man and for this Toots filled the stage with members of the crowd, not something Security was expecting, well it was the last night of the tour but there must have been 50 people up there dancing. When the stage was finally cleared the band came back with a medley of the hits Stick It Up Mister and 54-46 That’s My Number which they did in a gospel style to whip the audience up. At the end of the evening everyone had got what they came for, toots ia a real entertainer and with his tight band looks sets to carry on for a few years yet. Mark Westall.
