Lovers rock is a style of reggae music noted for its romantic sound and content. While love songs had been an important part of reggae since the late 1960s, the style was given a greater focus and a name in London in the mid-1970s. A style suited to the London reggae scene, Lovers rock represented an apolitical counterpoint to the conscious Rastafarian sound dominant in Jamaica at the time. It combined the smooth soul sounds of Chicago and Philadelphia soul with reggae basslines and rhythms. Rooted in the Sound systems of South, the style had particular appeal amongst women and produced many female stars including Carroll Thompson, and the first British singer to have a lovers hit Ginger Williams’ “Tenderness” in 1974. Louisa Mark, was aged just 14 when she had a major lovers rock hit with her version of Bobby Parker’s “Caught You in a Lie” in 1975, this spawned the distinctive young girl female sound associated with early lovers rock. This was followed by the husband and wife production team of Dennis and Eve Harris then had a big hit with T.T. Ross’s “Last Date”, and Dennis Harris then set up a new label,Lovers Rock,at the south east London premises on Upper Brockley Road along with John Kpiaye and Dennis Bovell, which gave the new genre a name.

South London trio Brown Sugar (including a young Caron Wheeler, later of Soul II Soul) pioneered a subgenre, ‘conscious lovers’, with songs such as “I’m In Love With a Dreadlocks” and “Black Pride”. Others who released records in this subgenre included the Battersea songstress Winsome. Lovers Rock became a staple of London’s sound systems such as Chicken Hi-Fi, Success Sound, andSoferno B. Neil “Mad Professor” Fraser would be a key Lovers Rock producer, working with Deborahe Glasgow, while Bovell would produce one of the genre’s biggest hits, Janet Kay’s “Silly Games”, which reached number 2 in the UK Singles Chart in 1979. Although noted for the preponderance and youth of its female exponents, the new style produced its fair share of male stars as well, notably Trevor Walters, Honey Boy, and Winston Reedy. The trend also saw the emergence of many male groups, including Tradition, The Investigators and the Birmingham group Beshara, who had the emotive reggae chart hit “Men Cry Too”. Subsequently, numerous well-established Jamaican acts came to try their hand at the new sound. Most successful among these were Gregory Isaacs, Dennis Brown, Sugar Minott, and later Freddie McGregor. Brown’s “Money In My Pocket” in 1979) and Minott’s “Good Thing Going in 1981) were both big hits in the UK Singles Chart.

The popularity of Lovers Rock has continued, and in the 1980s the Fashion label was hugely successful with UK audiences, and the Revue label had a major hit in 1986 with Boris Gardiner’s “I Wanna Wake Up With You”. In the 1990s the likes of Mike Anthony, Peter Hunnigale, and Donna Marie enjoyed huge success with the genre, and several British stars have performed at Sunsplash Recently lovers rock revue concerts featuring up to 15 artistes at a time are now held regularly in large prestigious venues such as the O2 in Greenwich, with the brand name “Giants of Lovers Rock” being the most successful. Consistently attracting crowds in the thousands lovers rock promoter Orlando Gittens has been credited with giving the genre life in the new millennium.

Bob Marley Biography

Robert Nesta “Bob” Marley, (6 February 1945 – 11 May 1981) was a Jamaican singer-songwriter and musician. He was the rhythm guitarist and lead singer for the ska, rocksteady and reggae band Bob Marley & The Wailers (1963–1981). Marley remains the most widely known and revered performer of reggae music, and is credited with helping spread both Jamaican music and the Rastafari movement to a worldwide audience. Marley’s music was heavily influenced by the social issues of his homeland, and he is considered to have given voice to the specific political and cultural nexus of Jamaica. His best-known hits include “I Shot the Sheriff”, “No Woman, No Cry”, “Could You Be Loved”, “Stir It Up”, “Jamming”, “Redemption Song”, “One Love” and, “Three Little Birds”, as well as the posthumous releases “Buffalo Soldier” and “Iron Lion Zion”. The compilation album Legend (1984), released three years after his death, is reggae’s best-selling album, going ten times Platinum which is also one Diamond in the U.S., and selling 25 million copies worldwide.

Bob Marley was born in the village of Nine Mile in Saint Ann Parish, Jamaica as Nesta Robert Marley. A Jamaican passport official would later swap his first and middle names. His father, Norval Sinclair Marley, was a white Jamaican of mixed and English descent whose family came from Essex, England. Norval was a captain in the Royal Marines, as well as a plantation overseer, when he married Cedella Booker, an Afro-Jamaican then 18 years old. Norval provided financial support for his wife and child, but seldom saw them, as he was often away on trips. In 1955, when Marley was 10 years old, his father died of a heart attack at age 70. Marley faced questions about his own racial identity throughout his life. He once reflected: I don’t have prejudice against meself. My father was a white and my mother was black. Them call me half-caste or whatever. Me don’t dip on nobody’s side. Me don’t dip on the black man’s side nor the white man’s side. Me dip on God’s side, the one who create me and cause me to come from black and white. The Bob Marley House in Nine Mile is a home that he shared with his mother during his youth

Although Marley recognised his mixed ancestry, throughout his life and because of his beliefs, he self-identified as a black African, following the ideas of Pan-African leaders. Marley stated that his two biggest influences were the African-centered Marcus Garvey and Haile Selassie. A central theme in Bob Marley’s message was the repatriation of black people to Zion, which in his view was Ethiopia, or more generally, Africa.In songs such as “Black Survivor”, “Babylon System and “Blackman Redemption”, Marley sings about the struggles of blacks and Africans against oppression from the West or “Babylon”. Marley became friends with Neville “Bunny” Livingston (later known as Bunny Wailer), with whom he started to play music. He left school at the age of 14 to make music with Joe Higgs, a local singer and devout Rastafari. At a jam session with Higgs and Livingston, Marley met Peter McIntosh (later known as Peter Tosh), who had similar musical ambitions. In 1962, Marley recorded his first two singles, “Judge Not” and “One Cup of Coffee”, with local music producer Leslie Kong. These songs, released on the Beverley’s label under the pseudonym of Bobby Martell, attracted little attention. The songs were later re-released on the box set Songs of Freedom, a posthumous collection of Marley’s work.

Popcaan Biography

Andrae Jay Sutherland born July 15, 1988 Saint Thomas Parish, Jamaica, better known as Popcaan or Poppi, is a Jamaican dancehall artist. Popcaan is originally from Seaforth, St Thomas, Jamaica. As a youngster he attended the Happy Grove High School located in Hector’s River, Portland Jamaica where he began to show signs of his love for and desire of wanting to become a dancehall artiste. During his high school days, Popcaan was associated with other potential dancehall acts such as Zebbi D, Gilberto, and War Hammer just to name a few. He was known by many to be some what of a trouble maker during his high school days, as he was always getting into trouble with authority within the school.

In 2007, he was spotted at a party and asked to join Kartel’s group Portmore Empire. Popcaan made his debut in 2008, With his smash single “My War”. He gained international success in 2010 with the hit song “Clarks” which also featured his mentor Vybz Kartel. He is also famous for his songs “Dream”, Raving on the Summertim riddim which has been a huge hit and “Gangsters City”. Most of his songs start with his signature catchphrase “wha ah gwaan?” and “not nice”

In 2011, Popcaan received Excellence in Music and Entertainment (EME) Awards for the ‘Best New Artiste’, and ‘Collaboration of the Year’ for “Clarks” with Vybz Kartel and Gaza Slim, the song also winning the award for ‘Song of the Year — Dancehall. Popcaan Left Vybz Kartel & Gaza empire in May 2011, no actually reason was said why he left.
